Agents usually order their Blood and HOS
profiles from a Paramedic facility that usually does the Paramedic exam, blood draw, ekg,
PFT, etc. for their client. The following are the most common blood/HOS tests
requested by insurance companies and the normal ranges for these tests.
We feel that an understanding of what the
underwriters are looking for will help the agent and clients better understand the
underwriting process and therefore help get their policy issued.
We hope this topic helps you.

BLOOD, HOS PROFILES
(most commonly requested tests)
Albumin -
May be increased in cases of dehydration or sample evaporation. Decreases in Albumin
are generally more significant and may be associated with poor diet, advanced liver
disease or kidney disease. Reference Range: 3.4 to 5.4 g/dl
2.5Albumin/Globulin Ratio - Simply
accentuates abnormalities of Albumin or Globulin concentrations. Reference
Range: 1.2 to 2.5
Alkaline Phosphatase - Elevated Alkaline
Phosphatase levels are associated with parathyoid, liver or bone disease and may be
elevated in pregnancy or at times of bone growth or repair. Reference Range:
Male 20 to 125 U/L - Female 20 to 115 U/L
ALT (SGPT) - Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT)
is found in a variety of tissues. The elevation of ALT in blood is an indication of
possible liver or heart disease. ALT may also be elevated in response to many types
of medication or heave muscular exercise. Reference Range: 0 to 45 U/L
Apolipoprotein A1 (APO-A1) - is the major
protein associated with High Density Lipoprotein (HDL). Increased levels of APO-A1
are associated with reduced risks of coronary heart disease.
Reference Range: 96 to 176 mg/dl
Apolipoprotein A1/B Ratio (APO-A1B) - is a
more sensitive, specific and stable indicator for coronary heart disease (CHD) than
LDL/HDL Cholesterol Ratio or any of the individual cholesterol components. (The
lower the ratio, the higher the coronary risk.)
Reference Range: 0.89 to 3.56
Apolipoprotein B (APO-B) - is the major protein
associated with Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), and is important in the regulation of
cholesterol synthesis and metabolism.
Reference Range: 43 to 128 mg/dl
AST (SGOT) Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) - is
found in a variety of tissues. The elevation of AST in blood is an indication of possible
liver or heart disease. AST may also be elevated in response to many types of
medication or heave muscular exercise.
Reference Range: 0 to 41 U/L
